Today is the two year anniversary of my writing stories...

My first attempt at story writing, as an adult anyway (I'm sure I had to write a few stories in school), was a story called "Jimmy Gets Replaced" which appeared on an "adult" site on April 21, 2009...it was short, under 1000 words, and notable for the lack of attention it received as much as anything...it had a 3.5 out of 5 average, and got no comments until months later...

Just reflecting back that if I went by the reaction to my first story, I probably would have quit writing there and then...

I'm glad I didn't...
Yeah, STP is cool Xuani...

Here's an oldie I found while surfing YouTube...brings back memories...hey, I'm old...what can I say?

Thanks, Alan. I love that idea. I always wanted to write children's books. Articles sound a bit easier, especially when they only want around 500 words.

I don't know how you're finding so many of these calls for submissions, but you're doing a great job.

Glad you liked that Lisa...there is a related link you should check out, basically a similar magazine aimed at girls only...

So far I'm finding that C. Hope Clark's FundsforWriters site is the best source for submission calls, grants, contests and the like. The site and newsletters really live up to the name, and she really does an amazing job searching the net and finding everything that matters...and putting it in one spot...

I've been picking out a couple of things I thought were interesting and posting them...for one thing, I wanted to show people that there are other ways to make money as a writer than just writing novels and short stories...

Every single greeting card, bumper sticker, kid's book article and puzzle...heck, anything written...somebody had to write it...and most likely got paid...
Happy New Year to Milee and anyone else celebrating today...

Poyela Boishakh...did I get that right?

Wishing you the best, hope it's a good one...
Cheers,
Alan.

There is a whole world of paying opportunities out there for writers, and it's not all short stories and novels...every greeting card, bumper sticker and button...somebody has to write it...

And while writing greeting cards is not exactly the road to fame and fortune, it's always nice if you can get paid for something you do anyway...

Here is a link for both artists and writers...

And a related link to card companies and a sticker company that take e-mail submissions...

Good luck with those...as usual, if you come up with anything particularly interesting, let us all know...
Del Shannon's classic..."Runaway"...I get dizzy watching those girls going in circles though...
I'm sorry about that last post where I said I've heard it all now...you know how that goes...

I really think I may have now though...how about a "twitter fiction magazine" that specializes in sci-fi, fantasy and horror tweets...all 140 characters or less??? I thought so...here's the link...

Thought you heard about every paying literary market, eh? Not so fast...this site actually pays for tweets...that's right, nanofiction of 140 characters or less...

The pay is a bit nano as well...but, what would you expect?...

Just a note, I sent in my poem "We Shall Never Forget" to their Patriotic Compilation, and even though it was a few days past the deadline, they sent me a note today that they will consider it and let me know by June...

So, if you come across a submission call that is past the deadline...just attach a note with some legitimate sounding excuse like temporary insanity, or you were abducted by aliens, or your dog ate your story...and you never know...it might actually work, and they might still consider your submission...
"If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit..."

Not sure who said that originally...but it was no doubt some great sage of the ages...
A big Congratulations to Sharon on her recent story sale/e-book deal...

You go girl...keep up the great work...
Cheers,
Alan.

You have to like the title of this site...FundsforWriters...they have a bunch of resources regarding submission calls, contests and the like...and everything seems up to date...

They also have a couple of newsletters...in case you don't have enough to read as it is...

For the more "mature" crowd...and don't everyone look at me...here is a small publisher that caters to baby boomer types...hence the name Silver Boomer Books...

They have a submission call page, and from what I can see generally have a few short story compilations in the works. These old pensioners are a bit "frugal" I'll have to say...if they publish your story they'll throw you ten bucks and a copy of the book...but, it just might be your chance to get in print...

Here is a link to an e-Zine based in Canada that pays for both short stories and poems, at the rate of seven cents a word for stories, and ten bucks for a poem...

They have a theme of "Treatments of light and shade in words"...and no reprints accepted...

Hey Louise...I saw the Talking Heads back in '78 I believe it was...

Speaking of the "Good Old Days"...I was always wondering what my grandparents were talking about...apparently they had some good stuff back then...

"That cat's still high"...
