Author's Notes

"Though I wrote the lyrics to this song, I had to get AI to do the guitar chords as my “skills” do not stretch to doing that, even though I do have a guitar and every year I make a resolution that I WILL learn to play it, it just does not turn out that way. I am guessing now that as I get older and the pain from arthritis in my hands increases my chances of playing the guitar will decrease. This song is another step in my challenge of writing in every category. Don’t you just love a challenge."

Just an Old Country Boy

Verse 1

I was raised where the red dirt roads,

Wind through fields where the tall corn grows.

Mama sang hymns on a Sunday morn’,

Daddy worked the land ‘til his hands were worn.

Chorus

I’m just an old country boy, simple and free,

Don’t need much money, don’t need much to be me.

Give me a guitar, a porch, and the stars to enjoy—

That’s the life of an old country boy.

Verse 2

I learned young how to fish that stream,

Chase down a sunset, follow a dream.

First kiss stolen ‘neath the willow tree,

She said forever, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Chorus

I’m just an old country boy, simple and free,

Don’t need much money, don’t need much to be me.

Give me a guitar, a porch, and the stars to enjoy—

That’s the life of an old country boy.

Bridge

Some folks run for the city lights,

I’ll take the quiet of the fireflies at night.

A rusty truck and a loyal hound—

That’s my kingdom, my piece of ground.

Chorus (repeat)

I’m just an old country boy, simple and free,

Don’t need much money, don’t need much to be me.

Give me a guitar, a porch, and the stars to enjoy—

That’s the life of an old country boy.

Outro

So if you’re ever lost, just follow my song,

Out where the dirt road winds along.

You’ll find me smiling, with a heart full of joy—

Living life as an old country boy.

Key: G major

Tempo: Slow 2/4 country waltz feel (like Hank Williams or early Johnny Cash)
