OK, my Stories Space friends...if you have not read my first contest entry here...The Birthday Party...that touching, classic short story about an aging woman who throws a birthday party for her husband...you can always read it in this months issue of eFiction Magazine, out now...

Here is the link...enjoy...

You been smokin' that good stuff again, eh Scooter?

On another note...I've seen a couple of sites that do "custom poetry" for any occasion...here is one, as an example...
http://www.occasionalpoems.com/choices.html

I'm curious as to how much business they actually do...basically, you give them $100 and they write a poem for you...

I mean...I could do that...

I just got the thought in my head of starting my own site...maybe even on Blogger or something...

Hmmm...have to give this one some thought...

It's soo hot.. I can't deal with much more of this over 100 degree weather

I'm appalled and disgusted by these looting rioters in London, Bristol,Birmingham and Leeds. The damage has been devastating and this thuggary needs to stop. It makes me ashamed to be a fellow human being!

Hmmm...that's a bit extreme...yeah, I didn't realize how bad it was, but the reports seem to be worse and worse from what I hear from the news and people I know on FB who live over there...

Go use it as inspiration for a poem...try to find some good in all this...well, I think I commented one time that I have to look at the bad things that happen to me as inspiration for a story or a poem...

Just trying to find some semblance of reason for stuff that happens around me...I know it's not always much consolation, but it's something...

There is some good in this. As usual decent people find a way to do something good. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-14456857

Here is something that may be of interest to some here...I got an e-mail from the girl who translated my poem "What A Difference A Year Can Make" into Chinese...she wrote...

"By the way, can you tell me where I can find some good stories in English or something like fables or moral lessons that can teach youngsters how to be a good citizen or things like that.
I would like to translate some of them to let more Chinese people share.
Thank you.

Zhang"

Haven't given it a whole lot of thought yet, just got the e-mail tonight...was thinking maybe something by Steffanie or something along those lines...but, I'm open to suggestions here...

If you can think of something, and want it considered...let me know in a PM...

This is your big chance to teach the children of China how to be good citizens...

I'm not sure what age group she is targeting, but in my experience the best teaching stories for children of all ages are fables. There are some very good Chinese fables as well, her kids might relate to those. African and Arabian ones are rather good too. I mostly used Grimm's fairytales (that was my teaching bible), they have just the right balance to teach kids in a fun way. I will try to find a few that are I've always used in my teaching.

I'll ask her what age group she's targeting...I think she might be looking for something a bit more modern, if so it would be interesting...

I've often thought it would be nice if my writing would/could serve some meaningful purpose...I'm sure every writer feels that way at some point...writing something that would teach children moral values would certainly be a greater purpose than the norm...

But, will get back to you...I'll write her tonight...

On another note...I was over on Poetry Craze this morning...and no, I never did pull any of my poems off there...still chickening out actually...

But, I was looking through some of my stuff to see if there were any new comments, and came across one on "We Shall Never Forget" that I found to be rather flattering...check it out...
http://exakta66.poetrycraze.com/we_shall_never_forget_9-11_tribute-19337.html

That's one of the reasons I do value a site like Poetry Craze where I get a lot of views...people have sometimes asked if they could use a poem of mine to send to a friend or loved one because it expresses how they felt...

Not saying it happens that often, but I happen to find it extremely flattering when someone finds something I wrote significant enough to send to someone they care about...

Stuff like that makes me feel good about being a writer...perhaps more than anything else, in a way...

Yes, ask her. I will see what I can find in my old teaching logs. Such a shame I lost all of the stories I wrote as teaching aids when my old pc crashed. If I can't find any, I might write some new ones for her. It's been a while since I've written for kids though.

And yes, that is very flattering indeed. I am sure that your poems inspire quite a few people, I know that they've inspired me.

Ahhh, that is really a shame...the subject of protecting one's work from disaster is not emphasized enough I feel...I know, I got my computer stolen just about a year ago...

Not trying to encourage anyone to leave Stories Space, why would you anyway? It is about the nicest site on the net, and believe me, I'm on quite a few sites...but, one of the reasons I post my stuff on various sites is for protection in the case of disaster...

Let's face it...computers crash, get stolen, etc...flash drives I don't trust for nothing, really...I know some horror stories I've heard about those things...

But, if you have your stories posted on several sites...even if it is some rinky-dink two bit sorry-ass excuse of a site that nobody goes to...it is a more secure back-up method than flash drives, or even CD's that can get lost, stolen or accidentally tossed...

Just something to consider...

Who exactly is that one person in the chat rooms talking to, I wonder?

Oh, btw Miss Rascal...I think we may have finally found out the answer as to who the one person in the chat room is...

LOL! I posted that before I realized it was possible to be rewarded with a badge for talking to an empty room every day for three weeks. Now I have come around to be a devoted self-talker (or empty room talker).

What excellent news about the new-old Dr. Seuss stories being published!

Oh btw...just thought I'd mention...I was in the dentist office a couple of days ago, and they had a copy of Green Eggs And Ham...so, of course, I read it...

So, if anyone asks me the last book I read...

Your dentist has excellent taste. So Alan, what is the last book you read?

"I write because kidnapping, torturing and murdering fictional people is legal."

I survived my first day back at school, (got supplies and UPASS). Now to survive my first day of work at a day care center.

Or... this could be the start of a story called The Empty Room Stalker.
