I might be putting this in the wrong spot, but here goes.

I just got a letter in the mail that states that one of my poems is going to be put in an anthology of sorts. It's also up for a prize and if I want the book, I have to pay for it. Sounds like a scam to me. If your poem is picked to be in something, shouldn't they give it to you?

When your poem or story is going to be included in an anthology, usually part of the prize is one or several free copies of the anthology, since you're providing their content. Sounds unfair to expect you to pay for something you've contributed to.

I got that same letter, I realized today...it is from these people...

There's a ton of stuff in there...stuff to sign and all...I have to read it through carefully, but my initial thought is if they will publish it in print without me having to buy the book...I will say "yes"...

I think the only real "scam" is they count on the fact that most people who have a poem in the book will buy it, at the relatively steep price...

But, if I can get a poem "in print" and it doesn't cost me anything...I will go for it...

I really have to spend some time reading every line of everything they've sent me in the next few days...

That's what I thought. for the price they're asking for the book, they should pay me that and send a free copy.

Btw Sharon...I got the letter and read the whole thing over twice today...my poem is definitely going in...still tempted to pay the money to get the book when it first comes out...but, if you notice, the book comes out in November...just in time for Christmas...they do this every year btw, give out the $1k prize in September, and the book comes out in November...

Did you notice you can buy a case of 12 for $369? I know they count on some people buying them by the case, and giving them to every friend, family member and coworker as gifts...and trust me, there will be people who will...

That's why I said to you, just after the holidays this book will show up on eBay...and used poetry books aren't known for selling for big bucks...the biggest expense will be the shipping...

I'm still debating whether I want to pay extra to get it in my hands sooner...I know they count on how much authors like to see themselves "in print"...

It's funny, because this whole thing brought back an old memory...I used to work with a gentleman named Emile Toussant back in 1981/82, and there used to be a rumor going around how he was a "famous poet"...

And one day he brought into work this big book, and sure he enough, he had one poem in it...out of about 500 in the book...

That's why I'm so tempted to pay the extra to get the book as soon as it comes out...so I can start that "famous poet" rumor in the neighborhood as soon as possible...

You know what I mean...

Some days are just not worth getting out of bed for. Just want to crawl back into bed and pull the covers over my head......

"I write because kidnapping, torturing and murdering fictional people is legal."

Sorry to hear that Yas btw...but, I can relate...as long as it's not every day...

I don't normally like to post contests that have fees over in the contest and submission call section, but here is a contest run by the Missouri Review, which is pretty respectable...$20 entry fee though...
http://www.missourireview.com/

They offer three $5000.00 first prizes in each category of fiction, poetry and essay...so, it's a nice payday for someone...maybe a Stories Space Cadet...

I just sent the proof thing out so they can put the poem in it. Let me know when you find it on eBay so I can get my hands on it.

Today, September 7 marks one year since I first attempted to send anything out to a "paying gig"...since then, I got 14 stories and poems in four e-Zines, five of which I actually got paid for...and I have a poem coming out in a real book in November...oh, and I won a contest on Stories Space (I think that's around here someplace, btw)...so, there is hope for anyone...hopefully, the next year will be even better...

I have to admit I'm really quite flattered at how many people chose to use my poem We Shall Never Forget (9-11 Tribute) to honor the tenth anniversary of this event tomorrow...I was aware it was going to be used in at least one church memorial, but a Google search found it on quite a few sites...

Municipal government sites like City of Eureka Springs, Arkansas...
http://www.cityofeurekasprings.org/

Local sites like The Friends of Redford Branch Library in Detroit, Michigan...
http://friendsofrbl.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Business sites like Michael Wasserman and Associates, Inc...
http://hotbrokerjobs.com/911-%E2%80%93-we-will-never-forget/

And blogs like this one by ChefGarfy...this one has good recipes too...
http://chefgarfy.wordpress.com/2011/09/09/2976-angels-called-to-heaven/

I can tell you with great certainty that it is on quite a few blogs...it really is very flattering...

And while it's extremely touching that so many chose to commemorate this event with words I wrote...it's also somewhat emotionally overwhelming to say the least...

I really could use a long vacation...

My uncle wrote a novel...I had thought about it recently, I read it...it wasn't bad if I recall...

Anyone here ever do the poetry reading thing? Anyone ever even been to one? Can anyone read, or does it depend on the event? How many poems do people normally read, that sort of thing?

I'm curious...thinking of looking into the possibility, I live in the NYC metro area...so, I'm sure I can find one...just don't anything about them...

Though, I figure someone here does...

I'm probably better off just going to one first, without thinking about actually reading anything, just to see what one is like...but, would like to hear from anyone who's been to one...

Time to read and write... Hmmm, facebook.
Right, focus now... Just gotta check lamebook and fmylife first.
Come on, you can do all this later. Get to work... Maybe I've received comments or votes on Storiesspace.
No, you didn't. Now get to work... ooooo, forumthreads.
A signature? Bah! Damned be your signatures and their feeble minded minions. I will have no signature so that every post is unique!
Too much things to do in such a short amount of time. A few new pieces will be coming soon from me, once I get the time to write.

On behalf of the Stories Space Team, I would just like to personally extend a warm welcome to our newest member RantingSenior...

I saw that his mom had packed him a nice lunch when she dropped him off this morning...so, I assume he'll be staying here a while...

I just have a sneaking suspicion that this represents a new dawning in the history of the written word...but, it's just a hunch...
