Growing up, we had fried chicken on Sunday. Now we have chicken nuggets without bones. Where do boneless chickens come from? A butcher gave my mom soup bones. Now they come in a package. Three for four dollars. Granny snapped green beans. Now they have no snap. Just in a can with a flap.

Succotash was corn and lima beans. Now it's an expletive from a damn cat. Jello came in powder to mix with water. Now it comes already made. Sorta. Corn came on the cob with husks. Now corn is without ears. The red-eye gravy was simple. Now one needs a college diploma.

Fish was affordable if one had a pole. Now there is no water hole to toss a rubber worm in. Trees are gone so poles are now plastic. But the fishing tackle cost more than granny's silk purse.

The "good book" was read before bed by candlelight. Now Playboy is read in the dark using a cell light.

Water came from a tap in the kitchen. Now it comes in plastic from a machine. Sometimes, having to tap the damn box it came in.

Granddad's tobacco was dark and sweet. Now it's obsolete. So is his 1953 Studebaker with whitewall tires.
