Father Sun dies
Darkening the copse
As deeper night begins.
Mother Gaia sleeps with us,
At rest beneath the barren limbs
Of leafless trees trembling in damp wind
Foreshadowing new growth with promised spring.
Pleas ring out
The shining Father
And fertile Mother Earth.
When will light and life return.
Gifts are offered on raised altars
This is the shortest day of each year
So we cry out in fear and awe once more.
Seeking blessings and salvation once more
Our dance of renewal shakes the ground
With pounding feet. And songs of glee
Echoing through joy filled air,
While smoke is drifting up.
Spreading to the east
To the gleaming,
And the new day breaks with beneficence
Smiling upon those who ignored chills.
Winter snows still coat the landscape.
Beneath the whiteness sings life,
And Mother's breast will flow.
Feeding us with love,
In our copse,
