The Danse Macabre

178 words 178 words

Cracked marble floors, extinguished candles
Hanging from the ceiling, a chandelier dangles
Shattered mirrors, withered paintings
Dust coats the ornate wood carvings

Take a seat amongst the wreckage
Play to the phantoms a melodic message
Let your music reverberate throughout the room
May the lonely ones rise from their tombs

Strings fill the abandoned chamber
One by one, they rise from their eternal slumber
A shiver creeps up your spine as the temperature drops
And for just a moment your heart stops

All these souls are back for one last dance
Their smiles suggest they are grateful for the chance
Partners whirl, ghostly dresses sweep the floor
An indicator of who they were before

Some gentleman gossip in the corner,
A woman chases after her giggling daughter
Long-lost brothers greet each other with an embrace
A man approaches a lost love with a timid face

Your arms tire, the song ends and the spell wanes
Satiated souls return to their astral planes
A wonderful gift given to have them unite
Even if it was only for one night
