Lonely in the night and rain,
My heart is lost in bare, cold dreams
That slide beneath the rotting mulch,
Never to be brought to life.

Let the shadows sing in pain,
Shuddering mists upon the moors;
The year fades dark in drifting seas
Where serpents writhe in hidden caves.

Paper flowers and candle stars
Bite the air in darkling smoke
Where rise they cold amidst the fog,
A roiling, rancid bitter scent.

Let the world turn where it will
On its unswerving, ugly way;
Bring me the new year's petulance,
A leering grin I cannot meet.

A penny a tear, I greet new time
With lonesome hope that will be slain;
I'll kiss to sleep the twelve months more.
Echo, echo, lost last years.
